Classes with 100% of students present each day add a piece onto their Potato Head for our Attendance Challenge. Check some pics of our current present potatoes! The first class to complete their potato gets a potato chip party! Ms. Mayse's class is in the lead followed by Mrs. Powell and Mrs. Goines' classes.

High Attendance Day is Wednesday, September 9th. Let's have the highest attendance in the district. And reminder, each class is racing to complete their potato head first to earn a potato chip party! Every day the class has all students present they add a body part.
Being at school every day and arriving on time are important habits that begin early. Even in preschool, kindergarten, first, and second grade, attendance matters! Research shows that students who are chronically absent in the early grades are less likely to read on grade level and are at greater risk of not graduating from high school. Building the habit of showing up every day also helps children develop responsibility and routines that will carry into school, work, and life.
At NPS, our Wildly Important Goal is to reach at least 96.4% attendance each day. We have a new visual in our cafeteria to help our students follow our progress. Our Wildcat is holding a graduation cap, and each day we reach our 96.4% goal, the graduation cap goes on his head! Students can look for the cap each day to see if we reached our school-wide goal. Students earn cat cash on days they meet our school goal.

Dear NPS Families,
Regular attendance and arriving on time are important parts of helping your child learn and succeed. Each day builds on the day before, so even a few missed days or frequent tardies can lead to lost learning time. Developing good attendance habits now also builds responsibility and prepares students for expectations they will have in the workplace as adults.
Arrival begins at 7:20 a.m., and students go to class at 7:35 a.m. Students who need breakfast should arrive by 7:35 so they have time to eat and get to class on time. School dismisses at 2:50 p.m.
Our daily attendance goal is 96.5%. On days we meet this goal, students earn Cat Cash to spend during their monthly visit to the Cat Cash Store. It is a fun way to celebrate everyone working together to be at school and ready to learn!

The weather is looking dry for Saturday! NPS students and families are welcome to come play on the school playground. We’ll have hot dogs and water fun! This also overlaps with our Volunteer Day, so come join the excitement at NPS!

As a school and district, these forms are not just about lunch; they are a direct tool for advocating for the resources students need to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. The accurate completion of this form by every family, regardless of their perceived income status, is essential to secure the following critical supports:
1. CPE / Free Meals for All Students
What it does: Allows entire schools to serve breakfast and lunch to every student at no cost. Newport Independent School District is part of this program.
How it helps: High form completion rates prove our school’s need so we can keep providing free meals for everyone year after year.
2. Title I Funding (Extra Academic Help)
What it does: Brings federal funding directly to our school.
How it helps: Pays for intervention staff, math and reading materials, learning tools, and teacher training that benefits all students.
3. FRYSC (Family Resource Youth Services Centers)
What it does: Funds our school’s resource center staff, programs, and supplies.
How it helps: Helps students overcome non-academic barriers by providing supplies, clothing, programming, etc.
4. 21st Century Grants (After-School & Summer Programs)
What it does: Wins competitive grants for free student activities outside regular school hours.
How it helps: Pays for after-school educational support/tutoring, STEM programs, after-school clubs, and summer programming at our schools.
Bonus Impact: Due to our overall free and reduced lunch percentage, our schools often qualify for specific local grants that fund in-school assemblies, field trips, and specialized services from community agencies.

Kindergarten open house is on Monday, August 10th from 4 - 6 PM. This is a great time to learn what kindergarten is all about and help prepare yourself and your child for a successful school year.

Start of School Assistance (SOSA) is an EducateNKY volunteer initiative that helps students in Covington and Newport start the school year feeling welcomed, supported, and ready to learn. Volunteers will serve during the first three days of school, supporting arrival, classrooms, lunch, recess, or departure based on each school’s needs.
